Iwan Baan
The last six years since Iwan Baan (Dutch, 37) took up architectural photography, he has travelled the world, waking up in a different city, in a different Continent every week, living out of his suitcase with his laptop and cameras as his loyal companions, turning his hotel room into his office of that moment. Although he owns a home based office situated at one of Amsterdam’s magnifying canals you will hardly find him there. Iwan loves his nomadic live, waking up with a different view almost every week.
Since then, Iwan has challenged a long-standing tradition of depicting buildings in a static style of photography.
While still showing architecture in flattering lights and carefully chosen angles, in Mr. Baan’s work buildings become backdrops for his photographs of people. He has a particular interest in the way architecture is used by real people in different cultures and their everyday life.
Iwan Baan has photographed buildings by many of the world’s most prominent architects, including Rem Koolhaas, Toyo Ito, Steven Holl, Morphosis, Zaha Hadid and he is among the world’s most published architectural photographers. Iwan has won prestigious prizes. Among others the Julius Shulman Prize.
